Tongue-Tie & Lip-Tie Treatment

Frenectomy Procedures in Alexandria, MN | Rauk Dentistry
A healthy, functional smile starts with the proper alignment and movement of your lips and tongue. At Rauk Dentistry in Alexandria, MN, we offer professional frenectomy procedures to correct issues caused by tight or restrictive frena. A frenectomy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that can improve oral function, speech, and overall dental health.

What Is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes or releases a restrictive frenum, the small band of tissue that connects the lips or tongue to the gums or floor of the mouth. When the frenum is too tight, it can cause:
  • Difficulty breastfeeding in infants
  • Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) affecting speech
  • Gaps between front teeth (diastema)
  • Gum recession or oral hygiene challenges
Our skilled dental team at Rauk Dentistry uses modern techniques to perform safe and comfortable frenectomy procedures for both children and adults.

Types of Frenectomy Procedures
1. Lingual Frenectomy (Tongue-Tie Release)
A lingual frenectomy targets the tongue frenum, improving tongue mobility and reducing issues with speech, eating, and oral development in children. Many patients notice immediate improvements in tongue movement following the procedure.
2. Maxillary Labial Frenectomy (Lip-Tie Release)
A labial frenectomy focuses on the upper lip frenum, which can cause gaps between front teeth, gum irritation, or difficulty with lip movement. This procedure supports better oral function and helps prevent long-term dental issues.

Benefits of a Frenectomy
Patients choose a frenectomy at Rauk Dentistry for a variety of reasons:
  • Improved speech clarity in children and adults
  • Enhanced oral function, including chewing and swallowing
  • Prevention of gum recession and dental issues caused by tight frena

Frenectomy FAQs
What is a tongue-tie?

A tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, is a condition present at birth where a thick, tight band of tissue (the lingual frenulum) under the tongue connects it too firmly to the floor of the mouth, restricting its movement and potentially affecting feeding, speech, and oral hygiene. It can look like a heart shape or notch at the tongue's tip when trying to stick it out, preventing it from reaching the lips or roof of the mouth. While many babies manage, severe cases can cause issues like poor latching during breastfeeding, speech impediments (like difficulty with 't', 'd', 's' sounds), and problems with eating solids or keeping teeth clean, often treated with a simple release procedure called a frenotomy.

How is a tongue-tie treated?
Tongue tie can be treated with surgical procedures like a frenotomy or frenuloplasty, which release the frenulum under the tongue. For mild cases, especially in infants, a lactation consultant may help with feeding issues, and the condition may improve on its own or with less invasive methods. In some situations, speech therapy or myofascial release may be recommended.

Does my baby or child need a frenectomy?

A frenectomy might be needed if your baby shows signs of restricted tongue/lip movement, like poor breastfeeding latch, pain for mom, excessive gassiness, clicking noises, mouth breathing, or later, speech issues or a gap between front teeth; however, it's not for all tongue/lip ties, and a pediatric dentist or doctor must assess symptoms like feeding struggles, mouth breathing, or developmental delays to determine if the benefits outweigh watchful waiting.

Who can benefit from a frenectomy?
Infants, children and adults with tongue-tie, lip-tie, speech difficulties, dental gaps, or gum issues can benefit from a frenectomy.

Is a frenectomy painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort. Local anesthesia or topical numbing ensures a comfortable procedure. Laser-assisted techniques further reduce pain and recovery time.

What are the benefits of CO2 laser release?
A CO2 laser frenectomy offers benefits like reduced pain, bleeding, and swelling due to its ability to seal vessels and nerves as it cuts, leading to faster healing, lower infection risk, and quicker procedure times compared to traditional methods, often with no sutures or general anesthesia needed, allowing infants to feed immediately and patients to return to normal activity quickly.

How long is the recovery?
Recovery is usually quick, with most patients resuming normal activities within a few days. Following aftercare instructions helps promote proper healing.

Can frenectomy improve speech or oral function?
Yes. Releasing a restrictive frenum can enhance tongue or lip movement, improve speech clarity, support orthodontic treatment, and relieve functional issues.

Does insurance cover frenectomy procedures?
Coverage varies by provider. Our team can help you understand your insurance benefits and available payment options.

Enter through the narrow gate.  For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.  Matthew 7:13-14
